Beatrice Domond is a professional skateboarder based in New York City. She’s 26 years old and the first woman to make Supreme’s skate team. The down-to-earth film director and artist sat down with Aritzia to talk about some important things in life.

You can only bring one outfit on a trip. What are you bringing?
[BD]
Some Vans for sure. My skateboard. Some workpants and then I’ll do a crewneck. It’s not a hoodie, not a t-shirt. Best of both worlds.

How do you bring your personal style into skateboarding?
[BD]
To me, it’s skate clothes. Whatever looks best skating or whatever’s durable because we fall a lot. Being a woman and being a skater, I started to grow into my own. If I like something it has to work with my skating.

Can you describe your relationship with skateboarding?
[BD]
It’s always been there, like a family member you know, it’s always been around in my life — it’s a love hate, you go through ups and downs with it just like anything else.

What’s something you hope will always be around?
[BD]
Human connection. I feel like communication is so important — and were losing that even though we think we're “social” on social media it’s the complete opposite. There’s something about environment — how you feed off peoples’ energy. It’s more beautiful.

How do you stay consistent?
[BD]
Now I’m learning, balance, patience — that’s a big one for me and just like letting go. Those are all things from skateboarding that I didn’t learn because skateboarding teaches you to never give up, no balance, because you’re always doing it. And not patience because you want to get it faster. So those are all the opposite traits that I have which help in skating but in life it doesn’t.

Where do you find solace or peace?
[BD]
Just by being myself. On my board, six in the morning, just cruising and having the best time. It’s like I’m in my own movie. Skateboarding is like art, but you can move around. That’s why it’s so beautiful.
